Shalom [Hello & Welcome]!
Well I’m not David Mitchell the hilarious comedian, or David Mitchell the brilliant author, I’m just me, a 31 year old Rabbi living in London with my wonderful and patient life-partner – Ian – and our two cats.
I’m a Progressive Jew and work at Radlett & Bushey Reform Synagogue (www.rbrs.org.uk) as their Associate Rabbi, which includes lots of rewarding pastoral, educational and life-cycle work, as well as heading up their Religion School and Youth Provision. I’ve been a Jewish educator for the last decade and have always tried to help people positively increase their Jewish identity through an array of fun and challenging programmes, services and experiences. I’m particularly interested in finding ways to make each person feel at home in the Jewish world.
My community belongs to the Movement for Reform Judaism (www.reformjudaism.org.uk) and I’m a proud active Member of the Assembly of Reform Rabbis UK. I am equally proud to be an Associate Member of the Rabbinic Conference of Rabbis for Liberal Judaism (www.liberaljudaism.org).
To keep me busy, alongside spending quality time with my partner, friends and family, especially my niece and nephew, I’m about to start a part-time PhD in Feminist Bible Studies. I’ve previously studied for a BA in Geography at St. Peter’s College, Oxford (leading to an MA Oxon) and completed Masters degrees in Jewish Education and then Hebrew and Jewish Studies at Leo Baeck College in London, where I also received my s’micha [Rabbinic Ordination]. My Rabbinic dissertation explored the complex agendas around sexual violence against men in the Bible. I’m now trying to take my research to the ‘next level’ through a PhD that will hopefully shed some light on what it means to be ‘unmanned’ (biblically speaking).
My hobbies include as much social and equality activism and interfaith dialogue as I can fit in. I am proud to be a Patron of Save the Congo (www.savethecongo.co.uk) the Education Advisor to the London AIDS Memorial Campaign (www.londonaidsmemorial.wordpress.com) and a member of the Steering Team for Keshet UK (www.keshetuk.org). I’m also a member of Rainbow Rabbis, the Labour Party and an out-and-proud Gay Jew (I’m always glad to hear from anyone who is Jewish/religious and LGBTQ or who has any questions).
To relax, I read Fantasy fiction, watch films, sing (loudly and often), travel, cook, eat (including all the foods that I probably shouldn’t), and drink coffee (+ the odd glass of vino).
If you want to know more, or would like to invite me along to your organisation to speak, teach, write or debate please just ask!
l’shalom [to the cause of Peace!]
